Toland Interview "We're
gonna try and go ride in this shit today at Boreal in a few hours."
"Have you guys built any quarter pipes out in the yard?," I asked.
"No, but we got that snowmobile out there....let's go check it out."
Toland was
motivated. The weather changed from rain to snow, warm one minute,
cold the next. As we scoped out the snowmobile, it was buried. "My
other roomate Antho has the key and he's not here," Jeff griped
as he produced a wood stick. I started eyeing the driveway for a
hikeable bank hit.
EEEeerrrrrggg!! Behind me growled a musclebound tan-colored dog
that resembled a pitbull. "This is Earth, Antho's dog. Come-ear
Earth!" yelled Jeff with his right arm over his head.read

Walter & Michelle Yu Interview One
day in 1990, we went hiking with Bud Fawcett out near Kirkwood and
a girl named Michelle Yu came along. She had just moved to Tahoe
from New Jersey and was pretty much a beginner on a snowboard. They
met that day and from then on, slowly became a nice couple. Since
then, they have moved in together, gotten rid of Michelle's yellow
Karman Ghia (their official snow car, that was driven out here from
New Jersey) and acquired an older Subaru Brat.read

Steinhorst Interview Skateboarding
is circular, and it's coming back around to it's roots. The whole
"image" thing has played itself out, so now kids have to let their
skating do the talking for them. I know kids who can do 6 ft. kickflip
Indy grabs, but they don't know how to do a little invert or something.
I'm not clowning 'em, but on the same token...Diversity. That's
my new word right now. Diversity, consistency, and longevity. read

McGuire Interview Remember
those synthetic courduroy stretch pants (often found on the racks
of any Salvation Army)? Think those days are over? Think again.
Just truck up to good old Mt. Rose ski area, home mountain of Kevin
McGuire. Kevin has left "The Biggest Little City," of Reno, Nevada
and retro hill Mt. Rose for Bend, Oregon and the computerized lift
tickets of Mt. Bachelor. Kevin's move reminds me of my move: I left
Dodge Ridge, California where the market for specialty ski items
such as Circle K blades and Wranglers is still booming.read on>>

Boarders: Jon North, Amie Comeaux & Kellie Wright Of
the handful of times I've come to the Sierra- Tahoe region I've
managed to spend a few days carving powder with Jon at Homewood
and Sugarbowl. He likes to go fast, ride in the trees, and fly in
a forward motion off of most hits. Our boy believes that `spinning
to win' isn't where it's at for his entertainment value. Jon once
told me in a candid moment that anything beyond a 540 degree aerial
maneuver doesn't make much sense to him.read on>>

Spearhead
Interview w/ audio clip If
you really want to reach people you can't shout at them.If you shout
at them then they turn their heads, but sometimes they shout with
you ,but if everybody in the room is shouting along with you, then
that means that I'm the only one thinking.I just wanted to write
songs this time around that people could just listen to and enjoy. And
maybe some people are just in it for the entertainment, then other
people have a higher level of thinking and they want to dig deeper
for the jewels that are hidden in those lyrics.read on>>
What
do these 4 bands have in common?: Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Love
Battery, Bush & Tesla It
seemed like every time I went to the Press Club to check out a band
(Girls Against Boys, Love Battery) I would see Brian Wheat of Tesla
chillin' at the bar. Now, besides Noah Salasnek, William Vollman,
Rudy Vanderlans and vine-ripened tomatoes, everybody knows that
Sacramento is the home to the multi-platinum rockers named after
Nicolai Tesla, one of the pioneers in the electricity business.read

Interview w/ Audio Clip Well,
interviewing Jale was easy enough. Heard they were comin' to town,
made the appropriate phone calls, and they were waiting for me when
I showed up at the Press Club one chilly friday night in January.
Writing a story on the all-female quartet has turned out to be,
well... another story.read on>>

Jazz thing w/ 2 audio clips When
I heard about the 3rd Annual Airwaves Jazz Festival, it seemed like
a perfect opportunity for an interview of sorts. The bill was a
veritable encyclopedia on the state of progressive jazz today, and
I don't mean Kenny G. The show was put together by seminal Sacramento
jazzman, Tony Passarell. Besides founding Sacto's longest running
avant-bop funk jazz group Bub, almost 5 years ago, Tony was also
a founding member in the bands Hunting Game and The Borman 6.read on>>

Foot Pole Interview "About
13 years ago Scott, Steve and I started playing in garages to have
some fun. We won a battle of the bands in a roller rink, which was
pretty exciting cause the guys in the other bands were about 25
and had long hair, the whole rocker thing, we were psyched. "When
we started our name was Scared Straight. People assumed we were
a Straight Edge Band....but we weren't. Also, Mystic Records marketed
us straight edge (without our consent). We got defined as a Straight
Edge Band because of the name so we decided to change the name cause
our philosophies are not 'Straight Edge' completely. We have nothing
against Straight Edge. We just don't want to be defined as something
we're not.read on>>

part of the Sick Wid It crew, a label outta Nor-Cal that's been
releasing beats for the trunk for a while now. After much hard work,
the label got consumed by Jive, which is owned by BMG, a major music

Dale Don't surf... Dick
Dale is one of those guys that can comfortably fit into the role
of a legend. His guitar playing is so signature that it can be easily
picked out from the rest of the pack and his music is usually synonymous
with the surf culture of the 60's. I was actually surprised that
he no longer surfs but after he told me why I didn't blame him.
A few years back his leg became infected while surfing. After coming
within twelve hours of having his leg hacked off, he found out that
it was due to mercury and other poisons that are beginning to dominate
our oceans.read on>>
Contest
Winners We
got a lot of great and some not so great stories as entries in the
contest to win a complete Santa Cruz Everslick Skateboard. It took
a while to get rolling, but the entries started rolling in and we
now have a winner. The grand prize of the complete deck with Krux
Trucks and Speed wheels goes to Melanie and Courtney Fitzgerald
for the story called Hard Candies. We picked this story because
it was entertaining, well written, soulful and because Courtney
sounds like she needs a skate. Chosen runner-ups will receive special
parting gifts courtesy of Heckler Door Prizes. read on>>
Sticks

digitally produced android-people are collecting snowboarding data
from all over the "new" seven planets while I'm about to experience
it from this (what used to be called a television) modern day Data-Galaxy-Info-laser-channel
transposer. It's hooked directly into my mind while I relax on my
Pulp Inducer 5000 (known 100 years ago as a couch). I am not able
to travel through distant space and time; too old. I believe I am
possibly brainwashed by this 21st century channel that is the answer
to an MTV long gone. Before the turn of the century, MTV controlled
the populace and was voted in as the president elect of the United
