A young band rising out of southern Californias Oxnard
is pushing the limits of independent/punk rock music and kicking
a little ass in the process. Defining themselves with a hard-work
ethic, theyve been touring continuously and spreading
the word of rock to the masses for sometime now.
No Motiv is blurring the lines of musical boundaries with their
freshly pressed And The Sadness Prevails... album on Vagrant
Records, proving they are a band to look out for in the future.
Ryan:
Who are you and what do you play?
Patrick: Im Patrick and I play drums, Jeremy sings and
plays guitar, Roger plays bass and screams, and Max plays guitar
also.
R: Whats Oxnard like?
J: Its nice and agricultural.
M: There are lots of fields and stuff. Its sentimental.
Ro: Theres a beach.
J: Its just home for us.
R: How old are you guys?
P: 22
J: 22
Ro: 19
M: 17
R: Really?
M: Yeah, my dads pretty lenient. I am 18 in July.
R: What kind of music would you describe yourselves as?
J: We focus on playing songs that are kind of sad. The lyrics
have always been on the sad side of things. Were getting
better at making everything come out the way we want it to.
R: Why is No Motiv spelled without an e at the end?
J: We came up with the name No Motiv because we didnt
have anything to call ourselves, so we called it No Motiv. No
motivation to call it anything. The no e, I dont
know why, no reason.
Ro: It looks better without the e.
J: Not only that, but when everybody puts an e at the end of
our name we can have something to complain about.
Ro: Ive probably misspelled automotive on stuff.
R: (To Pat) Hows Creep Division (band with members of
Sick of It All and Good Riddance along with Pat)? Is it a when
you get the time kind of thing?
P: When they get the time. Its fun. The kids like it.
I think the songs are good hard-core songs.
R: Howd you get hooked up with that?
P: Chuck from Good Riddance asked me. I said Id do it.
I had nothing else to do.
R: Do any of you have a job?
J: Yeah. Pat works for the city of Oxnard.
P: I dont do anything. I sit for 18 hours doing nothing.
M: Jeremy works for corporate Starbucks and I work for an indie
coffee shop and an antique store.
P: Rogers never had a job but he records bands.
M: For 60 dollars a day.
Ro: 40. I help out local bands that cant afford a lot
of money.
R: Are there any bands from Oxnard you think might make it?
J: The Whereabouts. Theyre trying to get a recording right
now.
M: If you see em live, youll understand.
R: Do you have any crazy tour stories?
M: We havent found any heads in bags yet.
R: Who gets the ladies on tour?
J: Probably Randy (Roger). We call him Randy, I dont know
why.
M: It happened on tour. Chuck from Good Riddance called him
Randy because he was new and didnt know his name.
J: He asked, Wheres your bass player, Randy?
and we just started
laughing. Its been Randy ever since.
R: Whats been the best show so far?
M: We played at Laserstorm.
P: Its like lasertag and they have shows there.
M: You bring your own PA.
Ro: They use the intercom over the music.
J: Calling mission 34. Also the Living Room in Goleta
and Aberdeen, South Dakota. Canada, too. Our van got broken
into and stuff was stolen. The promoter had a box after the
show and people donated money to fix the window. These girls
came up to us after the show and baked us homemade cookies and
told us the best place to get a cheap window.
M: Super nice people.
J: We got heckled at Gilman. Everyone yelled, You suck!
P: People told us theyd dance for us if we put them on
the guest list.
R: Any last words?
Ro: Write to us at NoMotiv@yahoo.com.
