Brasil
Brasil is
no longer a mystery, thanks to amazing exports like Bob Burnquist
who came in 1996 and blew peoples minds at Slam City Jam,
making Brasil a hot topic in the skateboarding world. Multiple
tours by major skate companies and large media coverage have
exposed this southern hemisphere gem as a skateboarding mecca.

Fresno
Perhaps
its the heat that makes such warriors out of the skaters
who live or have lived in Fresno. Theyre a wiry bunch
that are down to skate anything under any conditions.
Think Alan Petersen. What did these warriors grow up rolling
on? Well, a bunch of interesting spots.read

The
G-Games 2000 - Mammoth, Calif.
First of all, I never figured much to come out of my last minute
decision 4 hour trip to Mammoth for the Emap-Peterson Gravity
Games except a great scenic ride past Mono Lake and its
endless expanse of surrounding desert vista. But actually I
lucked out and got sunny skies, more snow than Tahoe to cruise
around on and saw Todd Richards go spinny fuckin
richter in the Superpipe. read

Skatopia:
40 Acres and a Pool
Only
knowing that it was located somewhere near Rutland, Ohio, I
set out on a drive that took half of a day. A lonely two-lane,
State Road 124 brought me to Rutland. Rutland is about as small
as a small town can be. It has no stoplights, just a one way
stop sign at the main intersection. read

Skateboarding
in South Africa
The inland area encompassing Johannesburg and Pretoria, known
as Gauteng, is where the biggest shit goes down. There are about
15 skateparks in this area and a bunch of shops run by the above
distributors and other independents. Being a highly urbanized
area, there are also numerous good street spots. read

Toronto
and Me
Luckily they supply a large amount of very skateable marble
structures but thats if security doesnt get there
first. Security in Downtown Toronto has always been a big problem
ever since the first wooden plank with wheels rolled its
way into the vast marble skateland. I dont know why we
dont use smokebombs or something like that for some kind
of diversion. What security guard wouldnt love to have
to take charge of a situation concerning some explosion in the
back alleyway while you and your friends are sessioning out
front? read

Snowboarding
in Massanuten, Virginia?
Yes, this sounds like every other park but no, there is blood,
sweat and tears on these here mountains. Thats my whole
point, Massanuten opened its humble beginnings back in
1993 with the valuable experience of guys like Aaron Hawkins,
who got the ball rolling, Justin Britton and Day Franzen, the
current head honcho. From 97 till present its been
snowboarder run with no interference from corporate yahoos.

While the other mags may want to talk about hairstyles, fashion,
or whos blowing who in Hollywood, well, we didnt
think youd give a lick to read about that crap while youre
sitting on the shitter or ass frozen stiff on a ski lift somewhere.
Heckler always delivers the goods and only the goods. Skateboarding,
drugs, and 4x4s; we discussed only the important things with
the band during a pre-show chat at NBA famous Arco Arena. read

The
Dismemberment Plan: Punk or Prog? I am fascinated by the bands songs and try to dissect
their creative process, but like all good artists its
slippery and elusive and no epiphany is reached. So, when they
mention that the first album Sounds like XTC on speed,
I opt for the easier what are your influences? standby.
We take a lot of cues from hip hop for sure, and I think
at the most macro level, you can say hip hop and punk rock are
probably our two biggest. read

DOA
We didnt coin the term but we put a tour behind it and
made it well known and spread it around. A lot of places we
went, people had never seen punk rock before, so the term hardcore
did become synonymous with it. At the time, we just thought
as long as you had this hard, no-compromising attitude, that
was hardcore punk. Hardcore was very political, very socially
active, very non-compromising. read

Pennywise
We were backstage at an ice-hockey rink where Pennywise was
supposed to play and I had just gone a full round with the wookie
from Hermosa Beach in an impromptu grudge match (a la Ultimate
Fighting Challenge), where wed wrestled until I tapped-out,
or perhaps better described, until Doug from 98Mute loosened
Fletchers butterfly hold on my neck long enough for me
to not to pass out from lack of blood to the brain. read

Rocky
Rocky harbors an uncanny perseverance that enables him to fulfill
this commitment. During times when most other artists
would throw their hands in the air and call it quits, Rocky
continues to find ways to make this magic happen. Ive
always had to kill myself to make music because Ive had
so many other things that have had higher priority. Now,
this is even more so the situation. read

The
Coelecanth Effect
Like the humble Coelecanth, some skateboard tricks disappear
only to be re-discovered in a later age by new explorers. Anyone
who has logged over a decade of skateboarding is familiar with
this phenomenon. Tricks, like fashion and skateboardings
relative popularity, are cyclic. read

Location,
Location, Location Thats
the motto of real estate agents. (Its also the motto my
wife is trying to get me to master, but thats another
story.) I used to believe location had so much to do with making
it, you know? Being in the right place at the right time,
where the scene is.read
