At
the last Les Savy Fav show in Seattle, the guy standing next
to me reached out, clutched my arm with disbelief, and screamed,
This is what rock n roll should be like!
The bodies in the crowd were dancing and screaming as their
feet took over, blinded by the thrill of losing all coolness
and composure to the moment. The sounds of Les Savy Fav overcome
all self-consciousness, with Tim singing and shouting bare-chested,
hanging from the rafters, while dancing and stamping around
on stage. The drums will literally be on fire, as Tim shoves
the mic into the face of a screaming drunk, and moves his
mouth as if hes the one screaming. The Cat and the Cobra
is the soundtrack to an adventure, and the story of your life
without any burden. Ive got to hand it to my heart,/
It should have shattered long ago/ but the goddamned thing
wont/ fall apart.
The music is sometimes expansive, when the bass takes the
foreground, and intricate, as the guitar spills over the skip
of the drums. I love the variety in the music on this record,
as well as the order in which the songs unfold. from a sweet
song slightly tinted sad, to an out of control dancing-naked-in-the-middle-of-a-business-meeting
song. They have a guest cello player and female vocalist,
a sound like a rattlesnake shake between songs, as well as
many fun recording tricks. They shout that lifes too
short, resenting its truth, but exciting you into action.
I want some insomnia/ Whos got that insomnia /
The breaks are broken/ but the gas works fine,/ Im working
overtime / Weve been sleeping/ with our shoes on/
for much too long./ Weve been sleeping/ with our bags
packed/ for much too long. The Cat and the Cobra forces
you to dance away your past and take chances now, before life
passes you by. -Shelley Pullman
