Upon first site, Jake Burton's house looks rather humble, considering
he is the founder of the world's largest snowboard company.
Nestled in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Jake's is the stage
for an annual house party that makes most house parties look
like bible study. It was at one of these ragers that I first
met Keir, er, I should say, that Keir first met me. Jake's property
has one big house and one small house. Connecting the two is
a skillfully developed concrete underground tunnel. Moreover,
offshoots of this tunnel include a lounge, food storage, and
a large area with a table tennis table and an underground soccer
field. I had been ruling the table tennis; no one could beat
me. When Keir, who was surrounded by his sno-bros, stepped up,
I could feel the intensity. He looked focused. He wanted to
win. Keir and I look like opposites. He was wearing an immaculate
white T-shirt and drinking bottled water. His closely shaven
face, clean complexion and well-groomed hair were illustrative
of his articulate behavior.
I, on the other hand, was sporting a thrift store cowboy shirt,
ruined skate shoes, 5-day stubble, zits, ratty dyed hair, and
had already consumed enough alcohol to make Mrs. Burton kick
me off the dance floor. Of the over 1000 people at this party,
Keir was the most challenging on the table. Unfortunately for
him, he could not take down the table tennis prowess that is
Mayugba. I beat Keir Dillon at table tennis. It's probably the
only thing I'll ever beat him at.Keir has an extremely competitive
gaming nature. Last year he entered both the US Open and Japan
Open, X-Games, Gravity Games as well as many other large contests.
Although he can adjust to a laid back attitude when shooting
or filming in the backcountry, competition is his forte. For
example, gambling at casinos is, for most, a losing battle.
But
Keir won over $13,000 in two sittings at blackjack. Showing
the other side to his personality, soul, he spent the money
on taking himself and his girlfriend, Vidya, to Hawaii. Also,
when I asked him what it was like to be on the same team as
one of the greatest snowboarders of all time, Terje Haakonson,
Keir again showed his competitive spirit and replied, "It's
every kids dream to go up against Terje and take him out. He
pretty much does his own thing, but I wish he'd ride more so
I'd have chance to take him out!"
Keir Dillon is a pro snowboarder who works really hard and is
thankful for all he has. And depending on which day you ask
him, he might say the same thing. Even though Burton pays him
fat cash to travel the world as a professional snowboarder,
I don't consider Keir pro. Until he beats me on the table, he's
all am. -Sonny Mayugba
