Ive raved about sometimes Heckler contributor Dustin Beattys
zine Anthem before, but
issue number 4 just ups the ante even more to the point where its
hard to call Anthem a zine. Its now a full fledged mag. The
photography and design just keep getting better and the metallic inks
on the three color cover are pretty bitchin. This
ish has features on Tina Basich, Tricia Byrnes, Atom and his package,
Dave Kinsey, Andy Jenkins, Fugazi, Helen Sticklers Gator documentary,
DJ Colette, the X Games, Girl Skateboards, Chorus Snowboards and much
more. <www.anthem-magazine.com>
On the electro music tip, I just picked up an issue of Groove a very
hip experimental electronic music mag with good writing and really
well done B & W design. This issue has an Autechre interview and
a feature on alt. hip-hop. Track this down if youre into the
silicon. <www.groovesmag. com>
One hundred and eighty degrees in the other direction is No Depression,
the venerable mag that chronicles the alt.country scene. The look
is zine, on cheap newsprint (but well designed), but the writing is
some of the best music writing youll read in any mag and much
better than most of the big mags. Issue #36 has features
on Jay Farrar (whos first band Uncle Tupelo spawned both Son
Volt and Wilco and whos first album, No Depression, inspired
the name of the mag), Beachwood
Sparks, Wayne Hancock, Gatemouth Brown and tons more. <www.nodepression.
net> And
finally, Dirt Rag is on issue #27! This B & W xerox cut and paste
zine has outlived many a zine and is the self proclaimed anti
zine. Its all about fun. The Freeriders issue has lots of stuff
on skating, snowboarding, rock stars, mountain biking and hot chicks.
Check it out. <www.dirtragzine.com>
