America
All photos and Words by Chris Carnel, unless
otherwise noted
Months prior to the terrorist attacks on New York's WTC this
essay was in the works due to a group of photos that (oddly
enough at the time) naturally implied America. At first I was
apprehensive about the idea since Heckler isn't really about
the Del Taco, the Golden Arches, huge SUV's, Apple Pie, Baseball
(Sam Toll loves it) and Chevrolet. But Sonny agreed that the
images were pretty cool and it seemed like an obvious link.
I started shooting random things with this in mind (Americana
Hotel, where the scum living there almost vibed/beat me away)
with no idea American pride and the flag would be a renewed
cultural staple, overnight. Later
on whilst doing our Heckler book tour from Sacramento to Seattle,
less than a week after September 11, 2001, flags and bold statements
(both positive and negative) were inscribed, painted and erected
everywhere - from freeway overpasses and small business storefronts
to jacked up primered trucks and bright yellow school buses
in a rare form of patriotism.
Brought mostly by the board sports enthusiasts that we all are,
we present you with an essay of America by Americans, all in
unique vision.
