ASAP Rocky is probably the best rapper that you haven’t heard of…yet. Fresh off a 3 million dollar record deal with RCA, things are about to dramatically improve for the Harlem, NY emcee’s career. He’s already on tour as the opener for Drake and both his “Peso” and “Purple Swag” music videos recently surpassed the one million view mark on Youtube (no small task for a then-unsigned artist).  LiveLoveASAP was released on Halloween this year and is the first full length mixtape from the man with an outspoken affinity for purple lean and high fashion.  ASAP Rocky’s rapping style is an eclectic one to say the least.  He has been able to nicely blend the feel of his native NYC with his other big influence, the area of Houston, TX and the chopped and screwed music that comes from the region. The result is a refreshingly original lyrical style and outlook that many hip-hop fans from all over the world will appreciate. While LiveLoveASAP has tracks produced by many different artists, the sound is surprisingly very cohesive throughout the entire tape.  The beats are tripping off purple lean and purple weed. Straight up. Its a dope combination that has a very laid back airy feeling to it, and the houston influence is noticeable throughout the entire thing. Some artist take the chopped and screwed thing a bit too far, but I think ASAP Rocky does a good job of mixing it in and keeping it fresh.  He does a good job choosing his guest artists and his topics as well. The guest spots feature his homies as well as some other up and coming rappers like SchoolBoy Q, and you can hear him rapping about everything from gang banging to Raf Simons and Rick Owens sneakers.  This is honestly one of the best mixtapes I have heard in awhile, from anyone. The consistency of everything is pretty next level, and there’s really no need to hit the skip button on any tracks at all. Im just gonna say I’ll definitely be listening to this one for awhile.
